Spring time cleaning is the day when you throw out all the garbage. Take a good look at your room and you’ll notice what a mess it really is. Now is the time to clean it up and start fresh. A way to do this is cleaning out ugly music, choosing new ones and starting fresh on good films.

No one can ever throw out a good Piolo Pascual Cd or dvd. But I think all the other ballad songs are out. It is time for some fun and upbeat music. It has been a season of endless rain and cold weather, bring some warmth to your music. Pop is never out. It might get outdated, annoying and repetative, but it is never to be thrown away. Spring is the time to remember and hope for a better future. Watching some good dvds will help surely comfort your battered souls. It is the time to search for the latest romantic-comedy films for Valentine’s Day and watch horror movies for those who are bitter.

Rivermaya proves to Filipinos that they are still here with a hot new album entitled, “Closest Thing to Heaven”. The most interesting part of the album is hwo they arranged the melodies. It was as if music is their own personal playground. “Closest Thing to Heaven” celebrates music to its fullest. It describes how the band feels where they are now as a group.

I think people would love the song “Mulat” for its lyrical sense pertaining a lot about social concerns. It is about the “palakasan” and “pasikatan”. “Reminis” is the kind of music that would probably give you LSS (Last Song Syndrome). Because it has a sunny disposition and a pop undertone, it makes you want to sing it. Most of the songs might be child-like, but there are also some songs for hardcore rock fans. “Loco Moco” is one of them that has a lot of metal guitar solos.

Pinoy Rock Music Reaching New Heights

Rock music in the Philippines has gradually been changing. It revolutionized on how we perceive music. It is constantly evolving into something more creative. There are those who stick to what they are good at like Greyhoundz. They give off an edge with their classic rock tone. Paraokya ni Edgar is a band I think everyone knows. There are also those who entertain us with their lyrical sounds like Spongecola and Kamikazee. My favorite band would be Hale that made an amazing song called “The Day You Said Goodnight.” I also find Urbandub interesting because they sound different to me. Although, I have not heard a good song from them in a while. I think Bamboo is the best both locally and internationally.

Since pinoy rock bands are growing in numbers, a lot of new bands have tried to enter the scene. There are more rock bands such as Pupil, Itchyworm, Sugarfree and Silent Sanctuary. Silent Sanctuary is a new mark on pinoy rock music. They fused violins and cello with their rock music. A lot have been interested in thier music and it goes to show how rock music in the Philippines is reaching new heights. It takes hard work and talent to make good music. We are fortunate enough that Philippines is filled with good musicians. We can never expect what they are going to do next.

Back To School Playlist

The season has come for students to go back to school. School is never fun. There will always be the long breaks that never seems to end. It made me think of making a back to school playlist of the latest music releases. It would surely help relieve the hours of waiting in the hallway. If you don’t have a car and you ride the bus, this playlist will save your life. It only takes good music to brighten up your day. As Mark Twain once said, “Dance like nobody is watching; love like you’ve never been hurt. Sing like nobody’s listening; live like it’s heaven on earth.”

The playlist includes music from good rock bands such as Hale, Soapdish and Greyhoundz. I think Hale’s “Bahay Kubo” is the best song in the playlist. Although my favorite of Hale is still “The Day You said Goodnight”. Try something a bit more heavy metal with “Shoot to Kill by Greyhoundz”. If you want to mellow out a little bit, listen to “Man In the Mirror by Aiza Siguerra”. The other songs included in the playlist are ballad or romantic music for those who like to chill on a hot school day.

A Little Too Perfect: Reloaded by Sam Milby

“A Little Too Perfect: Reloaded” is Sam Milby’s second album. A Little Too Perfect was released two years, but it is now available again for the public. The good thing about this album is that it is repacked with two songs from “And I Love You So”.

I had my doubts about this album. First, I am not a fan of love songs. Second, I know Sam Milby can act, but not everyone who acts can sing. Third, it looks like the songs are just another version of the original mix. When I listened to the album, I surprisingly liked it. It is still not the kind of music I’m used to, but I think it has some good songs. I do like that they incorporated the two songs from the movie which are “And I Love You and the movie’s theme song “Only You”. I also liked the album because it has acoustic versions which I said before were my kind of music. Acoustic versions allow listeners to hear the real voice without any overlay or distractions. It is emotional and powerful that never gets boring.

Christian Bautista was first scene on ABS-CBN’s “Star In A Million”. But his breakthrough song was, “The Way You Look At Me”. It not only hit local airways, it was internationally played in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. In this album, Christian Bautista releases his platinum Collection.

The album is a compilation of his best songs. I think his best one is still “Colour Everywhere”, but a lot of people enjoy “Hands To Heaven”. Contrary to what people think, Christian Bautista is a great musician. His voice is very angelic and at the same time very powerful. I love that the album covers acoustic versions because it is unique and interesting. You can really evaluate the tone and quality of the voice with acoustic.

New CD release: Kundiman by Hale

Hale has recently launched its new album called “Kundiman”. In the past three albums, I would say the band has evolved. “Kundiman” is a new concept that Hale wants to introduce that is very much like Filipiniana. It is a symbol of our culture. As Roll Martinez (guitar) says, “It is called KUNDIMAN for the essence of the songs written and we thought it fits the album perfectly. It’s about the cultural observation of our mother country. We’re expressing the state of mind of our society in a humane context and not political.”

I would always love Hale for “The Day You Said Goodnight”. It has been so long since they had a good song so I was really excited to see an interesting album. At first, I thought it was going to be all rock metal that you would love but will quickly forget. But I was surprised to see and hear that it is totally different in a good way. The main song in the album is called ‘Bahay Kubo”. If you have seen the video, you would better understand the music. The context is about two individuals who are looking for a safe haven and in the end they find it in each other’s arms. The song is different just as its video. It is directed by Nani Naguit and with a cameo role done by Heart Evangelista.

Bahay Kubo is not a pop song so don’t expect catchy lyrics. It is an intellectual song and there are several emotions within the music. It is a song that you will love, the more you hear it. I would say the album is very haunting that it makes it me want to hear and understand more about the music and its melody. The new album was specially designed to reflect the soul of the album with images to connect with the Filipino culture. Champ Lui Pio (frontman and songwriter) says, “We wanted to come out with an album that we’ve never done before, release an all Tagalog album. That was the concept. As an artist, one way or another you want to pay tribute to your country, your culture, your language. This is the basic foundation of Kundiman.”
